BIRTH OF OUR UNION

In Queensland And Federally
1889 The Brisbane Butchers Employees' Union is the union's foundation name. 1890 First federal conference of the Butchers Union of Australasia is held in Sydney in August, with representatives from New South Wales, Broken Hill, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. Nothing comes of it as after all branches, except Victoria, ceased to exist.
1891-92 Name changes to Brisbane District Butchers' Employee's Union. A more correct description as the union has organisations over an area roughly covered by the present-day Southern District. An attempt fails to form a Federated Queensland Butchers Union to link with organisations developing in Townsville, Rockhampton and the other centres. The union collapses in 1893.
1903...
All unions then in existence-South Australia, West Australia and Victoria-form the Federal Meat Industry Union.
1902 A small and ineffective shop employees' union is formed. By 1905, there are only 35 members. 1905 Management committee of the federal council of the Australasian Federation Butchers Employees Union apply for registration under the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Act.
1906 1900 Jack Gilday is elected secretary and sets out to unionise workers from all sections of the industry. The union grows rapidly and plays a prominent part in uniting all states into one federal body-the AMIEU 1912 Federal Council on April 11 decides a name change would more correctly describe the union's wide coverage. The union is registered on October 5, 1912, as the Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union, the name it still holds.
